04/24/2002: "Coincidence? Or… Something Else?"
As the countdown continues until Indy arrives, I keep finding similarity after similarity not only between DJ and Indy as individuals, but the circumstances under which they came into my life.
First and most obvious, Indy is almost exactly the same age as DJ was when I bought him, they were born in the same month, May, and I got both within days of their fourth birthday. The purchase prices were exactly the same. Both were very green under saddle. Both came from the state just north of where I was living at the time. DJ came from Oklahoma, and I was living in Texas. Indy comes from Michigan, and I’m now in Indiana. Of course, both are Morgan geldings, and, while Indy doesn’t LOOK like DJ, in personality, they could almost be clones.
The circumstances are eerily similar as well. When I unexpectedly lost my first horse, Sirron, I had just spent ALL my available cash purchasing a truck and trailer. In order to be able to purchase DJ, I had to sell some of the stock that I had accumulated as a Sears employee in their Profit Sharing Program. Since I had already used a considerable amount of the money I myself had contributed in buying the truck and trailer, under the rules of the Plan at that time, in order to sell stock, I had to take the ENTIRE amount out and start over. To come up with enough money to buy DJ, I sold all but seventy shares.
This time, money was short because of DJ’s vet bills for the last two years. We knew we were on borrowed time with DJ, but we were shocked when we lost him so suddenly on March 6. In order to buy Indy, I sold THOSE LAST SEVENTY SHARES I acquired so long ago.
I guess the last straw came this morning when I flipped the page on my calendar to May to note the Saturday that Indy is coming. My calendar of course features pictures of different horses for every month. The picture for May features a Palomino and a Bay frolicking in a pasture. Indy is a Palomino and Ami is a Bay!
My friend and fellow Journaler, Ed Littlefox, told me that there is no such thing as “coincidence” in his Universe. Food for thought, isn’t it?
