04/19/2002: "The Countdown"

So, the countdown to Indy’s Arrival has begun in earnest. Yesterday and today, I was out flagging the fence lines. I put flagging tape on the paddock fences yesterday, and today I started flagging the fence in the pasture proper. The fence in the pasture is field fence, so it’s fairly visible. But, I flagged it ALL when we moved DJ in here, and I plan to do the same with Indy. You can NEVER be too careful, especially when introducing a horse to a new place. Besides, Indy is much younger than DJ was when we moved him in. Indy seems like a very sensible guy, but he and Ami are going to be ripping and running, and while SHE knows where the fences are, he doesn’t. I just don’t want him accidentally hitting a fence. Flagging tape is cheap insurance.

Some of the fence however, is too far-gone to flag LOL! We knew that, and now it’s getting crunch time to get it fixed. The weather hasn’t been at all cooperative, but it’s getting better now, and we’ve GOT to get this done. The relatively short fence line in front is the worst - it’s just GONE. We get “ponding” in that area with almost every rain, and the fence posts have just been sinking into the mud. On top of that, a big tree limb fell on that stretch during the ice storm we had last winter. MAJOR repair work. There are trees and big boulders on the other side of the fence forming a pretty fair natural barrier, but we don’t intend to trust THAT.

The east fence line is longer, but not as bad. Some of the fence sections have just been pulled loose from the posts - mostly from being hit by deer. We get HERDS of deer in our field, jumping our fences. Let me tell you - deer are murder on your fences! I noticed quite a bit of damage on the better fence lines that had been done by deer over the winter. I love the deer, but they sure can batter a fence.

It’s been so hot and buggy the last few days that I had to get Ami’s fly sheet and mask out. She was getting bit up big time. Ami thinks Indy will find her irresistibly sexy in her Fly Buster get up. Personally, I think he’s more likely to spook out of his socks, but I’m not telling her that. Why bust her bubble?
