11/28/2003: "Desperate Measures"

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I can’t remember who said that, but he/she was certainly right. So, a couple of weeks ago, I FINALLY saw the doctor about this throat infection that’s been plaguing me for some six weeks. Since I was getting too weak to even muck out the stalls, I knew I had to do SOMETHING!

Obviously, I’m not the sort to visit the doctor over nothing – or even something. When my doc saw me, he said, ”What are YOU doing here? You’re NEVER sick!” He prescribed an oral antibiotic and said if that didn’t do the trick, I’d need to have some blood tests. Fortunately, the antibiotic worked like a charm, and I’m FINALLY done with having a constant swollen, sore throat and painful glands in my neck. Now, I just have to get my strength all back.

Naturally, in the meantime, our weather has deteriorated into actual winter-like conditions. Although, for northern Indiana, it’s still pretty mild. It’s wet, but at least it’s not FREEZING wet. Both Indy and Ami look like walking Equine Disaster Areas every afternoon, but at least I’m getting back enough energy to groom them. Indy LOVES to be groomed, so no prob there. Even Ami is tolerating it – up to a point – her own little stinker of a self LOL!

Even though I’m no fan of cold weather and never will be, I have to admit I’m relieved for the horses that the weather is finally more seasonable. I know they were miserable in their winter coats with the temps staying around 60 degrees F! Good grief!

Indy never stopped his IndyAntics of course, but he definitely has more spring in his step now that it’s cooler. For instance, he took Muck Bucket Mania to new heights the other day when he swung an empty – thank goodness! – muck bucket up in the air and brought it down squarely on top of the butt of a totally unsuspecting Ami. As I’ve mentioned before, Ami finds ALL of Indy’s muck bucket tricks unfunny, but this added insult to injury – or is that injury to insult…? Whatever, she took off like a shot with him right behind – fortunately for her, without the bucket.

Yesterday, I let the dog out before I mixed up the horses’ lunches. Indy saw that and expected me to be coming right out. When I didn’t, he wasn’t exactly patient with the wait. As I was making up the lunches, I could see him out the kitchen window. He was galloping up and down the fence line, getting faster and more impatient with every lap. Arching his neck and back, bucking and bouncing, he was throwing a FIT. Little did he know that by making me laugh so hard, he was actually slowing the process. FINALLY, I got out there, and he came flying into the barn as if he hadn’t eaten for at least a month. Uh huh.

Speaking of lunch, it’s getting to be that time again, and I’d better get to it before Mr. Indy pitches ANOTHER fit just for the heck of it. See ya’ll after lunch. ;o)

Why is it we worry like a mother hen if our horse has a slightly snotty nose, but we have to be on our death bed before we take ourselves to the doctor?

You be a good "girl" and take ALL of your meds, Suzy, and keep those Indy & Ami stories coming!

Indy is truly one of the most lovable of characters! I know he knows his clowning is being revealed to all of us and he is enjoying his celebrity!!
So sorry you have not been well...tis' the season. Every year I am ill for about 2 weeks right into Christmas. I am hoping this year is going to be different.

Suzy,
Glad to hear you're feeling better. I'm like you...I had horrible stomach pains at work a couple of years ago...went home early but was caring for my friend's horses while she was on vacation so I went to her house and brought them in and fed them first..doubled over most of the time but determined to get it done, then I went home and had Paul drive me to the hospital where it turns out I needed emergency surgery and ended up being transported to a city hospital by ambulance.

You could really write a book about Indy's antics!! They always leave me in hysterics!! I can just imagine the look on poor Ami's face when that bucket landed on her butt!! :)

So glad to hear that your doing better- I've been wondering! I've missed hearing about Indy and Ami too.

Sounds like Indy's as much of a clown as always :)

Suzy, boy can I relate!
JD does the same stunt at dusk. If he is not brought in to chow down, then he runs and bucks and then will stop to see if i am coming to get him, if not then he just repeats the stunt until I come and get him. JD will be 25 this
March. It does my heart good to see him so full if energy!
